In the first of our series of survivor guest blogs we hear from talented artist Suzanne Grace who has kindly offered to support us with some art therapy sessions in 2026 for our survivors. Why does she want to give back to SLDAS? Hear her story in her own words...

Since going through a really difficult divorce and facing prolonged stress, anxiety and depression from my experiences with an abusive partner I have emerged as a strong independent woman who now empowers others with opportunities to grow.
It is the ability to reach out through my art that really empowers. I now run a small art business called Wild Art in Science (https://www.wildartinscience.com).
Some of my lows included me being kept in a cell overnight because my ex manipulated the police when I was the one asking for help.
My career and developing business getting destroyed by him and other difficult situations sadly included me fearing for my life facing real threats from him. But by far, the most painful was the alienation of my children against me via coercive control.
The scars are still apparent but healing slowly. If I had not had support from SLDAS during these times I am not sure how I would have been able to carry on. They empowered me to cope and move forward. I think the strength they gave me from just understanding my plight lifted me and helped me make sense of it all.
I was also the recipient of some wonderful chill out sessions courtesy of SLDAS , the most memorable one was visiting horses that were part of a therapy centre that helped victims of domestic abuse via hands on grooming activities with the animals.
Opposite is ‘Damaged’ – an early painting of mine which was slashed by my alienated eldest son after he was manipulated by my ex partner back in 2013. I still have the painting today and it has been repaired and restored and exhibited in the prestigious Atkinson Gallery in Southport.
My art became my saviour and allowed me to develop and grow in these adverse situations.
Since attending Liverpool Art college in 2012 I have always practiced art alongside my teaching.

My main inspiration as an artist had always come from nature and wildlife. Since the creation of a series of wildlife paintings I began to think of the characteristics of these animals in terms of predators and prey behaviours. These then inspired new thought processes and I considered how could I use my art to raise awareness of coercive control situations.
I curated an exhibition where I likened them to victims and perpetrators. I used my own experiences and researched ones of other victims to write narratives to support each individual piece of artwork.

I exhibited my collection of paintings including these descriptions whilst studying for a Masters in Art.
From this I was invited to support a charity ‘Refugee Women Connect’, where I donated art to raise funds via raffles and a mini auction and even managed to sell some.
Here’s a snapshot of the exhibition presented to support raising awareness of coercive control.
Each animal was characterised with a description as a victim or perpetrator relevant to their predator or prey status.
One of the pieces can be seen today at The Hatch Gallery New Brighton. I always feel so proud when I see people admire it without even knowing the journey behind it.

Never give up and always trust in yourself because it is always your spirit that will survive and overcome the challenges you are facing.
Believe in yourself and grow…

I am now rebuilding bridges with my alienated eldest son after 10 years of heartbreaking separation. I persevered with trying to break the silence and my heart was overjoyed I was about to give up and when he contacted me to rekindle our relationship after my despairing tireless efforts.
My other children have matured and finally can choose their own paths.
I am now looking to continue supporting others and developing my business with confidence and knowledge that can bring change.
